House Bill 270 Senior Homestead Exemption 65 Older & No Income Requirement to Qualify
Councilman Roderick Gay sponsored an initiative, approved by a 3-2 vote, granting all seniors aged 65 or older and individuals with disabilities who own their homes an exemption from the City of College Park property tax.
This legislation ends a decade long practice of auctioning homes with delinquent property taxes, preventing seniors from losing their homes. While an income requirement currently applies, the 2025 General Assembly will consider a proposal to remove it.
Qualifying residents will receive a credit for the City’s portion of their 2025 property tax bill, easing financial burdens and protecting access to essential utilities like water, gas, and electricity.
Applications for the Senior/Disabled Property Tax Homestead Exemption will be accepted from March 1 to April 30, 2025. These efforts, alongside initiatives like a moratorium on property tax auctions and utility credit programs, reflect the city’s commitment to supporting its senior and disabled residents with dignity and stability.
